Will I Be Free?
A poetry collection by Patrick Carpenter
Who are you? How will I know when I meet you? When I do, Will I be free?
In this endless circle we call life, there are few questions of the cosmic significance for which we have definitive answers. Perhaps the most strife is caused by the question of what we even are, as humans, or why we came to exist. What are we meant to do, meant to find? Why are we conscious in ways no other sentient being we’ve encountered is? Maybe, this question, among others like it, are why we suffer. So, could it be, if we knew the answer, that we could finally be free?

Will I be Free?
Beseech me, Oh great beyond
My brain is yours to stimulate
My soul to captivate
To corrupt or to enlighten me
To awaken within your walls, oh great barrier
You, this arcane, wonderous theatre
Take me on stage
Where mortality culminates
Defining me, guiding me
What say you?
When you take me, will I know it?
How can I believe in you?
What shape yet unbeknownst to me shall I seek?
And when at last I find you
Will I be free?

Hate the Sin
Help me, father,
For I have sinned
I’ve never confessed
But Merely obsessed
I’m Sure I’m right
But what’s out of sight?
I need a source
A seen or unseen force
Tell me how we culminate
Human perfection, no sin to eliminate
Or I’ll keep runnin’ blind
As one of a kind
Different and variable
But God willing, my heart is malleable
Help me, father,
Tell me why I’m not good enough
Just being human?
